As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on May 27, 2014, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm ET that summarized SHRP 2 Projects C40A and C40B:
SHRP 2 Developing and Testing a National Geospatial System that Integrates Ecological Tools and Data Sets (Eco-Plan). There was no fee to attend this webinar or other webinars in the SHRP 2 Series; however, participants registered in advance. A certificate for 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDH) was provided to attendees who registered and attended the webinar as an individual. This webinar was approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners for 1.5 Certification Maintenance Credits.

Project C40A produced a national-level integrated, geospatial ecological screening tool for early transportation planning to inform the environmental review process. With these advances, agreement on priority areas for preservation or conservation can be reached early in the process of planning new highway capacity. Data-based decisions can not only speed project delivery, but deliver projects that best balance community and environmental needs.
Webinar Presenters
- Stephen Ziegler, ICF International
- Shari Schaftlein, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
Moderated by: Stephen J. Andrle, Transportation Research Board
Webinar Outline
- PART 1: Brief overview of the SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Capacity focus area, and related SHRP 2 research
- PART 2: Presentation on the Eco-Plan web tool
- PART 3: FHWA’s perspective on C40A and C40B
- PART 4: Question and answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar was for presentations and the final 30 minutes was reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants were able to:
- Describe regional collaboration structures and detail how transportation agencies can reach agreement by geospatially integrating conservation priorities from environmental agencies and community groups;
- Review existing geospatial tools from various public and private agencies and ascertain how Eco-Plan fits within the scope and breadth of these geospatial tools;
- Determine the accepted resolution for geospatial data sets in order to adequately incorporate them into transportation planning activities; and
- Scope out their own local initiatives in order to begin testing the transferability and data quality from locally-developed geospatial tools and data sets.
