As part of the SHRP2 Tuesdays Webinar Series, TRB conducted a webinar on February 4, 2014 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm ET that explored the SHRP 2 project
Pavement Renewal Solutions (R23).

recorded webinar.
This webinar summarized the SHRP 2
Pavement Renewal Solutions research project, which provides tools for the design and construction of long-life pavements using existing pavements in-place as part of a new pavement structure. The products from this research include: a pavement assessment and scoping tool (“
rePave”), successful practices for rigid and flexible pavements, life-cycle cost assessment models, guide specifications, and a summary of emerging technologies. Benefits of applying this suite of tools include: longer lasting pavements, reduced long-term pavement costs, improved construction safety, and a robust decision protocol based on key variable inputs including life-cycle cost analyses.
Webinar Presenters:
- Newt Jackson, Nichols Consulting Engineers
- Joe Mahoney, University of Washington
- Jeff Uhlmeyer, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)
- Steve Mueller, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
- Greta Smith, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
Moderated by: Andrew Horosko,
Transportation Research Board
Webinar Outline:
-
PART 1: Brief overview of SHRP 2 mission, objectives of the Renewal focus area and related SHRP 2 research
- PART 2: SHRP 2 researchers introduce the results, concepts, products and experience gained from development and testing the project outcomes
- PART 3: Transportation Agency perspective and explanation of how the R23 products were applied and the resulting benefits
- PART 4: Implementation Strategies, Tactics and Opportunities
- PART 5: AASHTO’s perspective regarding the Pavement Renewal Solutions Project
- PART 6: Question and answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar was for presentations and the final 30 minutes was reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
-
Identify the 5 sub-products included in Pavement Renewal Solutions.
- Describe how “rePave” can assist in assessment of existing pavement structures, and how it can be used in the preliminary design and scoping of new pavement sections to achieve longer lasting pavement systems which include using existing in-place pavements.
- Discuss how Pavement Renewal Solutions can help to accelerate construction schedules, lower the life-cycle costs of pavement assets, and improve safety of our highway assets.
- Identify the construction practices and techniques that are included in Pavement Renewal Solutions.
-
Identify the types of Implementation Assistance that are available to agencies for the Pavement Renewal Solutions product.
