The Vector-Borne Disease Airport Importation Risk Tool
TRB has made enhancements to its Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) CRP-CD-137: The Vector-Borne Disease Airport Importation Risk Tool. The tool is a CD-ROM-based interactive tool designed to help define the roles of airports and airlines in the transmission and spread of insect-borne human diseases.
The tool relies on the assumptions that the levels of imported vector and vector-borne disease risk via air travel are related to the presence of flight routes connected to endemic regions, the level of traffic between the origin and destination cities, and the monthly climatic similarity between origin and destination.
The tool focuses on four vector-borne diseases—malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya; describes the relative importation risk for the selected airport; and provides suggestions for mitigation.
