Pollinator Habitat Conservation Along Roadways
Pollinator Habitat Conservation Along Roadways
Pollinating insect populations are declining, and, if widely distributed insect populations continue to decline, these species may become listed under the Endangered Species Act. Because capacity improvement projects and right-of-way (ROW) maintenance practices may negatively affect or “take” listed insect populations, state departments of transportation (DOTs) and other transportation agencies are encouraged to establish or conserve pollinator habitats along their ROW. NCHRP Project 25-59 looked at successful practices and lessons learned from states where pollinator species are listed; the results are 16 regional guides and associated tools to share this knowledge and to show how to implement integrated pollinator habitat programs.

Overview
NCHRP Web-Only Document 362 consists of 16 regional guides, regional accessory materials, and a communications toolbox to help inform DOT staff and leadership and the general public about pollinators. A conduct of research report that explains the research process along with gaps in knowledge and practice for future research opportunities is also available.
