The Transportation Research Board 1920-1996: The First Seventy Five Years
As part of its effort to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System, TRB has re-released in electronic format the January-February 1996 issue of the TR News celebrating the 75th anniversary of TRB. The magazine provides a history of TRB, which began in 1920 as the National Advisory Board on Highway Research and soon thereafter became the Highway Research Board. The Board’s creation reflected the states’ need for a research clearinghouse at the time that they were setting out on the unprecedented task of designing and constructing a national highway system to accommodate motorized vehicles. In addition to a history of TRB, the issue examines what might lie ahead for transportation in the United States. Alvin Toffler, the futurist author, describes predictions as possible, probable, and preferable. Four distinguished transportation leaders predict how transportation will have changed by the year 2020, when TRB will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
