TRB conducted a webinar on October 23, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that will highlight TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP)
Research Results Digest 268: Performance of Pavement Subsurface Drainage, which provides information about the overall effectiveness of subsurface drainage on the performance of flexible and rigid pavements, focusing on permeable bases. Contact Reggie Gillum at
RGillum@nas.edu for information about receiving a link to the recorded webinar.
This webinar will introduce reasons why proper drainage is important to ensure a high quality, long lived pavement and how extended pavement life and cost effectiveness can be achieved. In addition, the webinar will address construction practices that affect permeability as well as design considerations.
Webinar Presenters:
- Tom Yu, Federal Highway Administration
- Pavana Vennapusa, Iowa State University
- John Donahue, Missouri Department of Transportation
Moderated by: Maureen Jensen, Minnesota Department of Transportation
Webinar Outline:
- Performance of Pavement Subsurface Drainage
- Overall effect of subsurface drainage on the performance of flexible and rigid pavements
- Field Assessment of Permeability of Granular Base/Sub-base Materials
- Measuring permeability in-situ of materials such as recycled and reclaimed materials
- How construction practices can affect permeability
- How to incorporate these considerations into design
- Overview of 20 years of full width rock bases in Missouri
- Specifications, construction practices and performance of permeable bases
The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives:
- To understand the role of proper drainage in ensuring high quality, long lived pavement
- To understand the effectiveness of permeable bases and lessons about their design and construction
- To explore options about measuring permeability
