TRB Volunteer Profile: Asa Vagland
Asa Vagland, Head of Unit at the Swedish Transport Administration, is a featured volunteer in the
TR News. In this role, Ms. Vagland is responsible for the development and digitalisation of the future rail traffic management system and rail capacity planning system in Sweden. Prior to this role, she served as the deputy director of the Swedish Ministry of Infrastructure responsible for emerging technologies such as connected and automated vehicles, shared mobility, and mobility as a service. Her research focuses on gender mainstreaming in the transportation sector.
Additionally, Ms. Vagland managed the Swedish Prime Minister's Innovation Partnership Programme in next-generation travel and transportation. She was also is responsible for the Swedish engagement in the EU Directive of Intelligent Transport System, including development of connected, collaborate and self-driving vehicles and systems. Ms. Vagland founded the Network for Women in Transport Policy, as well.
Previously, Ms. Vagland served as a traffic planner for the County of Stockholm. She has also been a consultant, when she guided city, regional, and national transportation planning and analysis projects. She has been instrumental in developing Swedish transportation policy, as well as comprehensive transportation plans in South Africa, Latvia, and Lithuania.
At TRB, Ms. Vagland is a member of the Women's Issues in Transportation and cochair of the Subcommittee on Mainstreaming Global Research and Multifaceted Data Collection on Gender Issues in Transportation.
