Connected Cars and Autonomous Vehicles Roundtable: Summary of an Event
TRB participated in a “Connected Cars and Autonomous Vehicles Roundtable” hosted by Congressman Dan Lipinksi (D-IL) on June 22, 2016. This event explored challenges and opportunities for the deployment of autonomous technology, and discussed potential policy solutions to promote full integration of connected vehicles into transportation networks. TRB Standing Committee volunteer, Ginger Goodin, Director of the Policy Research Center at Texas A&M Transportation Institute, participated in the roundtable. Representatives from the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets, General Motors, AT&T, Global Automakers, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also participated. Ms. Goodin pointed out that, while the potential for these technologies is transformative, there remain many uncertainties from a public policy perspective. She emphasized the need for research to help the public sector in facilitating the deployment of these technologies in a manner and timeframe to achieve societal benefits. A large portion of the roundtable was recorded and can be
viewed online.
