TRB conducted a webinar on June 1, 2015, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm ET that covered roundabout construction and illumination, as well as the progress in research and practice of roundabout design over the past 20 years. Webinar presenters highlighted how international research and practice influenced United States designs and design heuristics, how to approach the sequencing of roundabout designs, ways to show the sequencing and challenges that will be faced during the process, and current national practices for illuminating roundabouts.
This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Roundabouts.
A certificate for two Professional Development Hours (PDHs) was provided to attendees who registered and attended the webinar as an individual. This webinar was approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners for two Certification Maintenance Credits. Contact Reggie Gillum at
RGillum@nas.edu for instructions on receiving a copy of the recorded webinar.

Webinar Outline
- 20 years of advancements in roundabout design
- The progress in research and practice in roundabout design, including geometry, traffic control devices, design for rural users, and high-speed rural design
- How international research and practice influenced United States designs and design heuristics
- What the community of practice should be focusing on and what might be expected as the design practice evolves
- Sequencing the construction of modern roundabouts
- Goals, how to approach sequencing, ways to show the sequencing, and challenges that will be faced during the process
- Signals, temporary striping, pedestrian crossings, temporary roundabouts, and other methods of traffic control to sequence the construction
- Real-world projects demonstrating how the above elements were applied to the sequencing of several modern roundabouts
- Roundabout illumination studies, safety benefits, and a case study
- Current national practices for illuminating roundabouts
- Previous research on intersection illumination and safety, data requirements for conducting a study on illumination safety benefits, and currently available public data sources available for conducting studies
- Safety benefits of roundabout illumination based on the analysis of select roundabouts in Minnesota
- Question and answer session
The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions. The Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP) categorizes this webinar activity as relating to health, safety, and welfare including core technical.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the evolution of the current state-of-the-art of design practice over the past 20 years;
- Discuss the origination of the concept of speed control;
- State common concerns and ways to address high-speed approach when designing for rural intersections;
- Summarize the state of the current practice on marking roundabouts, including issues and concerns that have surfaced;
- Explain how design for pedestrians has evolved and how sensitivity toward vulnerable rules has developed into current practice;
- Identify the proper approach to sequencing a modern roundabout;
- Describe different ways to present sequencing;
- State how to use the roundabout design to support sequencing; and
- Discuss how significant safety benefits can be achieved with lower levels of illumination.
