TRB conducted a webinar on February 27, 2013 from 2 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that highlighted TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program report: Renewable Energy Guide for Highway Maintenance Facilities, which provides information on renewable energy technologies and strategies for individuals involved in planning and developing maintenance facilities. Contact Reggie Gillum at
RGillum@nas.edu for information on accessing a link to the recorded webinar.
This webinar will explore how to use the Renewable Energy Guide. This report addresses how best to evaluate renewable energy sources for applicability to highway maintenance facilities, while also reducing the facilities’ energy requirements and implementing renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar power, and ground-source heating and cooling.
Webinar Presenters:
- Robert Lorand, SAIC
- David Panich, David Panich Architect
Moderated by: Ed Harrigan, Transportation Research Board
Webinar Outline:
- Part I: Introduction to the Guide - Overview, objectives, structure.
- Part II: General Considerations - Planning for renewable energy technologies in the context of the project development process; general considerations such as the role of energy efficiency/ energy conservation; financing renewable energy projects, guidance to determine technologies of interest for different situations.
- Part III: Renewable Energy Technologies and Strategies - Examples including passive and active solar photovoltaics; and concentration of solar power, wind, geothermal heat pumps, and biomass. Energy efficiency and demand reduction; alternatives and emerging technologies; and technology attributes, screening methods, and best practices for applicable technologies will also be covered.
- Part IV: Case Studies - Examples of applications of renewable energy technologies on vehicle maintenance facilities.
Learning Objectives:
