The Impacts of Climate Change and Variability on Transportation Systems and Infrastructure: Gulf Coast Study, Phase I
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released a report that explores the vulnerabilities of transportation systems in the Gulf Coast region to potential changes in weather patterns and related impacts, as well as the effect of natural land subsidence and other environmental factors in the region. The area examined by the study includes 48 contiguous counties in four states, running from Galveston, Texas, to Mobile, Alabama.
A similar study released by TRB, Potential Impacts of Climate Change on U.S. Transportation (Special Report 290), produced jointly with the National Academies’ Division on Earth and Life Studies, examines relevant climate change impacts on transportation and adaptation options. The report also offers recommendations for both research and actions that can be taken to prepare for climate change.
