TRB Webinar: Limitations of the Infiltration Approach to Stormwater Management

Stormwater management practitioners are invited to a TRB webinar on Thursday, August 15, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET. The webinar will provide guidance for determining appropriate siting and design of stormwater infiltration practices based on the limitations, risks, and benefits in the context of the built and natural environments. The practice of mitigating roadway runoff through infiltration has increased in recent years because of its ability to reduce stormwater volume, increase groundwater recharge, and reduce peak flows and pollutant transport. Some state departments of transportation are required to use infiltration practices for their roadway projects unless infiltration is proven infeasible. This webinar will address a broad range of issues associated with choosing and siting infiltration practices for mitigating roadway stormwater limitations, including effects of climate, soils, topography, geology, vegetation, and land use. Presenters will also discuss pollutants of concern on surface water and groundwater quality; effects on surface water and groundwater quantity; and conditions under which full, partial, and no or incidental infiltration would be feasible. They will also identify gaps in the body of knowledge and discuss options for improving the effectiveness and reducing risks.

For approved webinars, TRB’s webinar program awards Registered Continuing Education Provider (RCEP) Professional Development Hour (PDH) credits associated with participation only to the registered individual and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To receive PDH credits, please register as an individual and sign into the webinar from your personal computer. After doing this, you may join your group in a meeting room. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
