TRB conducted a webinar on February 11, 2015, from 2:00pm to 3:30pm ET that featured research conducted by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) on airfield safety considerations. Webinar presenters discussed best practices and practical applications for designing aircraft aprons (with safety in mind) and how to manage risk from aircraft overrunning, undershooting, or veering off the runway.
This webinar was organized by the
Airport Cooperative Research Program in collaboration with the
TRB Standing Committee on Aircraft/Airport Compatibility (AV070).
This webinar provided 1.5 Continuing Education Units for Accredited Airport Executives. This webinar has been approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners for 1.5 Certification Maintenance Credits.
TRB Webinar: Planning for Safety Considerations on Airfields from The National Academies.

Moderator: Geoff Baskir,
Aircraft/Airport Compatibility
Webinar Outline
- PART 1: Overview of committee activities and ways to get involved
- PART 2: ACRP Report 96: Apron Planning and Design Guidebook
- Overview of the guidebook
- Best practices of planning and designing aircraft aprons
- Interpreting and applying the guidance in consideration of the unique operational, environmental, and physical nature of airports
- PART 3: ACRP Report 50: Improved Models for Risk Assessment of Runway Safety Areas
- Using a risk-based methodology to help estimate the risk of aircraft overrunning, undershooting, or veering off the runway
- Using the analysis and results to assess the level of safety for airports that have not been able to comply with current standards due to physical, cost, or environmental constraints
- PART 4: Question and answer session
The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the complexity of the apron environment;
- Summarize the influences on apron planning and design given the physical and operational diversity of airports;
- Explain how a risk-based methodology can be applied to aircraft overrunning; and
- Discuss examples and case studies of where this risk-based methodology has been applied.
