TRB Webinar: Engineering Properties and Field Performance of Warm Mix Asphalt

TRB conducted a webinar on October 14, 2014, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ET that compared the engineering properties of warm mix asphalt (WMA) and hot mix asphalt (HMA) and presented the early field performance of a series of WMA and companion HMA test sections built across the United States. This webinar was the first of a two-part series highlighting the research and findings of NCHRP Report 779: Field Performance of Warm Mix Asphalt Technologies. The second webinar in the series, Effects of Warm Mix Asphalt on Plant Energy & Emissions and Worker Exposures to Respirable Fumes, was held on October 27, 2014, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm ET.

• Recall the different categories of WMA used in the United States;
• Identify laboratory performance tests that can be used to assess asphalt mixture properties;
• Summarize how properties of WMA mixtures compare to those of HMA mixtures;
• Summarize how WMA pavements perform compared to HMA pavements in the first three to five years; and
• Describe the research team’s recommended approach to WMA mix design.

Professional Development Hour Information
A certificate for two Professional Development Hours (PDHs) will be provided to Professional Engineers (PEs) who register and attend the webinar as an individual. For groups, only the person that registers and attends the session will receive a PDH certificate.
