Construction of load-carrying geosynthetic-reinforced bridge abutments are surging worldwide. The design directly supports the load of bridge girders without the need of deep foundation. TRB is hosting a webinar on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern that will provide an overview, comparison, and discussion of methodologies used in the design of such bridge abutments. They have the potential of alleviating the “bump at the bridge,” expediting construction, and requiring comparatively smaller working areas.
Design philosophy and construction techniques have differed, often significantly. Are these abutments reinforced walls with a surcharge? Or are they foundations without lateral support? The webinar will emphasize the outcomes of experimental, numerical, and field monitoring evaluations and a detailed impact assessment in NCHRP 24-41: Defining the Boundary Conditions for Composite Behavior of Geosynthetic-reinforced Soil Structures.
This webinar is organized by the Standing Committee on Geosynthetics and Standing Committee on Transportation Earthworks.
Some registrants will need to pay $95 to attend this webinar. Sign into MyTRB.org to view registration information.
Webinar agenda and presenters
- Definitions and design concepts: Jorge G. Zornberg, The University of Texas at Austin
- U.S. experience and field monitoring results: Burak Tanyu, George Mason University
- Experimental results to assess the impact of closely-spaced reinforcement: Jorge G. Zornberg, The University of Texas at Austin
- Numerical results to assess the behavior of load-carrying GRS abutments: Jie Han, The University of Kansas
- Impact of findings in current design guidelines: All Lecturers
- Question and answer session moderated by Barry Christopher and Dov Leshchinsky, independent consultants
The first 90 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this webinar, you will able to:
- Describe the advantages of load-carrying geosynthetic-reinforced abutments over conventional design
- Clarify the advantages of closely-spaced reinforcement in performance
Professional Development Hour Information
Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attend the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 2 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
Pre-registration is required. Once the webinar starts, you will be unable to register. Individuals that are registered for a webinar but do not receive their confirmation emails due to their organization’s internal firewalls can contact the TRB Helpdesk for assistance in signing in.
Please check with your licensing board to ensure that TRB webinar PDHs are approved by your board.
TRB will report credits earned to the Registered Continuing Education Program (RCEP). Complaints about registered providers may be sent to RCEP, 1015 15th Street, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, DC, 20005.
