Pavement engineers were invited to a TRB webinar on Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM ET. The webinar provided an overview of driving surface aggregate (DSA) and how it can improve the performance and sustainability of unpaved, low volume roads. DSA is an aggregate specification developed by Penn State’s Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies, designed to achieve maximum compaction and resist erosion. The gradation of DSA, coupled with the recommended moisture and placement guidelines, may result in a smoother, more tightly bound surface that preserves fine materials, rather than allowing materials to escape as sediment or dust. The presenters also discussed the benefits and limitations of DSA, including full life-cycle considerations.
This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Low Volume Roads.
The slides are available. Contact TRB webinar for a copy of the recorded webinar.
