Adjacent Box Beam Connections: Performance and Optimization
The U.S. Federal Highway Administration has released a technical brief that investigates four different shear key connection designs on bridges, including partial- and full-depth connections constructed with either conventional non-shrink grout or ultra-high performance concrete. Adjacent box beams are widely used in short- and medium-span bridges. A recurring issue with this type of bridge is the deterioration of shear key connections, which results in substandard performance of the overall bridge system.
