TR News Magazine
TR News is TRB's bimonthly magazine, which features timely articles on innovative and state-of-the-art research and practice in all modes of transportation. It also includes brief news items of interest to the transportation community, "research pays off" articles, profiles of transportation professionals, workshop and conference announcements, new book notices, news of TRB activities, and the TRB Annual Report.

TR News: November-December 2022: Integrated Flood Prediction SystemApril 28, 2023 TR News 342: November–December 2022 features articles covering a variety of topics. TR News: September-October 2022: Decarbonizing TransportationFebruary 22, 2023 TR News 341: September–October 2022 features a variety of perspectives on decarbonizing transportation. This theme issue is unique in that authors present thought provoking discussions—some reflecting decidedly strong opinions—on a controversial subject. One author presents ideas on how growth in transportation electrification may increase energy to power grids while furthering decarbonization. Another author poses the challenge California faces in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gases by getting drivers off the roads. Other authors outline the research needed to support carbon reduction in aviation. All give readers a lot to consider as we move toward a zero-emissions future.

TR News May-June 2019: Women and Gender in TransportationNovember 9, 2019 TR News: May–June 2019 addresses women and gender in transportation. Developed by the TRB Standing Committee on Women’s Issues in Transportation, this theme issue explores topics including statistics about the negative effects of women’s unequitable transportation access on the global economy; women and transit; a case study from Austria on women’s travel constraints; and the challenges that minority, low-income women face as pedestrians and bicyclists.

TR News March-April 2019: Renewing the National Commitment to the Interstate Highway System: A Foundation for the FutureAugust 15, 2019 TR News 320: March-April 2019 includes a photo essay that offers a look at the many sessions, workshops, events, awards, and networking opportunities at the 98th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board. Feature articles examine the policy and efficacy of public–private partnerships; the first 5 years of Ohio’s Research Initiative for Locals, an Ohio Department of Transportation program formed in 2013 to use research to solve local transportation issues; and a National Cooperative Highway Research Program project to develop national bridge design and construction specifications for accelerated bridge construction.

TR News November-December 2018: Alcohol-Impaired Driving Interventions and ResearchMay 25, 2019 To combat the deadliest, costliest danger on U.S. roads— alcohol-impaired driving—a study committee of the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine identified evidence-based, promising interventions to reduce fatalities caused by alcohol-impaired driving in the United States. The TR News 318: November–December 2018 issue of TR News will feature an article on the study, particularly its findings on alcohol-impaired driving interventions. Other articles will present information on TRB forums and international events highlighting automated vehicles, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program, and transportation-related noise research.

TR News May-June 2018: 40 Years of Transportation DeregulationOctober 3, 2018 The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. Although it was not the first congressional action to reduce federal economic regulation of transportation, the landmark act is widely regarded as the turning point in the more than 90-year history of the federal government intervening in the structure and operation of the country’s transportation industries.
