George S. Bartlett Award

The Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to highway progress.

The Award was established in 1931 by a group of friends of George S. Bartlett to perpetuate the spirit of friendship and helpfulness that he brought to his work in the highway field. George Bartlett, who the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) describes as "the greatest single influence on the use of concrete roads in the United States” was an advocate for concrete roads and worked with the University of Portland Cement Company and the Wane County Road Commission where modern road construction was born in the early 1900s.

Who Can Nominate

President of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official (AASHTO), the Chair of the ARTBA, and the Chair of the TRB Executive Committee

Nomination Process

Each organization may nominate three individuals. Nominee section process and submission support documentation is left up to the discretion of each organization. AASHTO acts as the Secretariate for the award.

Award recipients have the option to receive the award at the Annual Meeting of either AASHTO, ARTBA, or TRB.

Selection Committee

The recipient is selected by a Board of Award composed of the President of AASHTO, the Chair of the ARTBA, and the Chair of the TRB Executive Committee.
