Automated Vehicles 3.0: Preparing for the Future of Transportation

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has released a report that outlines the federal policy for automated vehicles. This report identifies six principles that guide DOT programs and policies on automation. It also determines strategies for how the DOT can translate these principles into actions. The document considers automation broadly, addressing all levels of automation (defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers as automation Levels 1 to 5), and recognizes multimodal interests in the full range of capabilities this technology can offer.
