Providing the Tools for a Safer Moped and Scooter Ride
There were 5,932 motorcyclists (including moped and seated motor scooter riders) killed in 2021, accounting for 14% of all U.S. traffic fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Relative to passenger cars, two- and three-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, and seated motor scooters (50cc or less) are associated with a higher risk for fatalities and serious injuries in the event of a traffic crash, as they do not offer the protection of an enclosed vehicle or include other safety enhancement features such as occupant restraints.
Improving Rider Safety for Mopeds and Seated Motor Scooters of 50cc or Less (BTSCRP Research Report 11), was released this past week by TRB's Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program. It provides state highway safety offices and other safety organizations with information and tools to help improve moped and seated motor scooter rider safety.
Mitigation Tools for Improving Rider Safety on Mopeds and Seated Motor Scooters (BTSCRP WebResource 2) is a related website that was also released this week.

Voice Control Appears to be Growing in Popularity in Certain Use Cases
Drivers prefer voice control systems (VCS) over manual controls when driving alone, on highways, in complex traffic, or when in-vehicle tasks are more distracting, according to a new study of 168 driver responses in China published in TRB's Transportation Research Record journal. Additionally, those who drive less and are familiar with voice controls prefer them more, suggesting voice control design can be improved to better suit driver needs. Sage Perspectives has the details.
