TRB conducted a webinar on April 25, 2013 from 2:00 p.m.- 3:30 p.m. ET that will feature research conducted by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) about environmental planning aspects for deicing materials and the collection and monitoring of storm water management systems. Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is no fee associated with this webinar.

Airport planners and designers face special operational challenges during winter storm events, such as the use of deicing materials for ice and snow removal from aircraft and airfield surfaces while minimizing the environmental impacts of storm water runoff that may contain toxins.
The presentations in this webinar will highlight the following ACRP reports that address these issues:
Dean Mericas of Mead & Hunt will present results of
ACRP Report 81: Winter Design Storm Factor Determination for Airports. He will discuss the application of a decision support tool to assist planners and engineers in evaluating facility- and project-specific information for identifying an appropriate winter design storm event for sizing deicing runoff management systems.
Mark Ervin of Gresham, Smith & Partners will explore results of
ACRP Report 72: Guidebook for Selecting Methods to Monitor Airport and Aircraft Deicing Materials. He will summarize storm water monitoring requirements in the context of identifying, evaluating, and selecting the appropriate methods to monitor storm water that is subject to runoff containing deicing materials. In addition, Mark will provide an overview of the selection process described in the guidebook and the information contained in the monitoring methods fact sheets.
Steven Corsi of the U.S. Geological Survey will present findings of
ACRP Research Results Digest 9: Alternative Aircraft and Airfield Deicing and Anti-Icing Formulations with Reduced Aquatic Toxicity and Biochemical Oxygen Demand. He will present information about toxic impacts of aircraft and airfield deicing and anti-icing formulations being discharged through deicing-runoff management systems. In addition, Steven will provide an outline of the research for reducing the toxic impact of these materials through alternative formulations.
Moderated by: Kevin Gurchak, Pittsburgh International Airport
The first 60 minutes of the webinar is for presentations and the final 30 minutes is reserved for audience questions.
Learning Objectives
Attendees will learn how to:
- Evaluate site-specific information to support decision-making processes for sizing deicing runoff management systems.
- Select monitoring methods for runoff containing deicing materials.
- Understand the environmental impacts of deicing materials and learn approaches to potentially reduce those impacts.
