Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS)

TRIS Facts
  • The Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database is the world's largest and most comprehensive bibliographic resource on transportation research information.
  • TRIS is produced and maintained by the Transportation Research Board at the National Academy of Sciences with sponsorship by State Departments of Transportation, the various administrations at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and other sponsors of TRB's core technical activities.
  • TRIS contains about 730,000 records of published research. About 50,000 records now have links to full text documents.
  • TRIS covers all modes and disciplines of transportation. Efforts have been made to increase coverage on the various transportation modes and in the areas of planning, environment, and human factors.
  • TRIS is available through two commercial vendors Dialog and Ovid.
  • Since 2000, most of the TRIS database has been available free as TRISOnline through the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' National Transportation Library.
  • The Research in Progress (RIP) records in TRIS are available as a separate searchable database through TRB. The RiP Database has expanded to include international research projects and university research.
