TRB conducted a web briefing or "webinar" on December 13, 2011 that addressed the findings of TRB’s National Cooperative Freight Research Program (NCFRP)
Report 13: Freight Facility Location Selection: A Guide for Public Officials. Contact Reggie Gillum at
RGillum@nas.edu to request a recording of the webinar.
Public officials at the state and local levels may be asked to consider the siting of freight intermodal terminals, inland ports, and warehouses and distribution centers. A limited understanding of the critical factors that drive site selection can lead public officials to expend time and resources on flawed strategies to attract facilities and incorrectly react to facility proposals.
To address this challenge, TRB’s National Freight Cooperative Research Program (NFCRP) has developed a report that describes the key criteria that the private sector considers when making decisions on where to build new logistics facilities. Webinar panelists will provide insight on freight facility location decisions and describe promising practices for transportation, land use, economic development, and regional partnerships for public-sector agencies and officials involved in and responding to freight facility development and location decisions.
A fuller understanding of the dynamics of freight movement will help communities successfully plan for, attract, locate, and partner with freight-related activities in their jurisdictions. Moreover, this webinar will address the importance of engaging in groundwork and collaboration for freight facility development success.
Panelists for this session include:
- Christopher Steele, CWS Consulting Group LLC
- Daniel Hodge, HDR Decision Economics
- Joe Bryan, Parsons Brinckerhoff
Moderated by: Jill Barrett, Fitzgerald & Halliday, Inc.
Mr. Steele will provide insights on the location selection process. Mr. Bryan will discuss how the challenges facing the logistics industry are changing location strategies and patterns. Mr. Hodge will explain selected case studies on specific projects and show the impacts and benefits of each, as well as lessons learned. Lastly, Mr. Steele will provide best practice suggestions for how the various public-sector parties can better integrate their policies and responses to ensure better community and regional outcomes.
